When I first met Duke, he had no idea what a treat was. Literally. When presented with his first carrot, he did a great deal of sniffing and a tentative oral examination before spitting it on the ground and staring at it in bewilderment.
He got over it.
Now an enthusiastic connoisseur of many fine delicacies, these simple homemade treats are Duke's first pick in side-by-side taste tests with store bought treats. For my part, I'm happy to be able to control the quality of ingredients and avoid preservatives and unpronounceable chemicals. The smell of them baking in the house is a bonus!
- 1 Apple
- 1 Carrot
- 1 cup Molasses
- 2 1/2 Cup Oats
- 2 Tablespoons Oil
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
Grate the apple and carrot, and mix in the other ingredients. Organic Blackstrap molasses will make a dark gooey treat, while the classic Brer Rabbit is more like a muffin.
You can spread the mix in an oiled baking pan and cut afterwards, but I personally like to use the little mini-muffin pans. They're the perfect size and less work, IMO. This recipe yields about 24 treats.
Bake for 40 minutes. You can do a second bake after they cool if you want a crunchier cookie.
